ASB News & Discussion
Stop & Search – An Essential Part Of The Toolkit Or Too Prone To Misuse?

The National Crime Prevention Institute (NCPI) has prepared a detailed report on stop and search practices used by police in England and Wales. This report aims to inform ASB professionals about the effectiveness, costs, and impacts of stop and search, especially on children and young people.
Stop and search, governed by frameworks such as PACE and Section 60, allows officers to search individuals for unlawful items. The report finds that while stop and search can moderately impact violent crime, its effectiveness in the UK is lower. It also highlights concerns about negative effects on mental health and community trust, particularly among minority groups.
Key findings include that targeted, intelligence-led stop and searches are more effective, and the cost is relatively low, at £10 – £16 million annually. Recommendations stress the importance of targeted approaches, regular officer training, and community scrutiny to ensure fair and effective use. Take Part In The New Victims’ Commissioner Survey on Court Delays
The Victims’ Commissioner Baroness Newlove has launched a survey to assess how court delays, including the Crown Court backlog, are affecting victims across England and Wales. The survey seeks to capture victims’ experiences with court waiting times and the impact of these delays on their interaction with the justice system.
Amid rising concerns about the strain on victims and support services due to lengthy delays—evidenced by recent Ministry of Justice figures showing a record Crown Court caseload and high rates of case adjournments—the survey aims to provide valuable insights and could be really useful for ASB professionals who are directly impacted by delays. For example, nearly 27% of cases were rearranged on the trial day as of late 2023, and significant numbers of victims have withdrawn due to delays.
The survey, which is anonymous and takes just five minutes to complete, will inform the forthcoming report. Victims whose cases resulted in a CPS charge can participate, with the survey available in English and Welsh until 12 September – why not share the link with your relevant contacts to encourage maximum participation?

Janine & Darren’s Weekly Round Up
Did you see our posts this month during #OpportunityDay on LinkedIn that brought to life the stories of our associates and how they got started with a career in ASB? We took the opportunity to do a poll and ask the question “Did you set out to work in ASB?” and the response was astounding – 96% of everyone who voted said that they DID NOT set out to work in ASB!
This is definitely food for thought when it comes to thinking about attracting and retaining talent in the sector, when there are so many amazing people creating meaningful impact. What are your thoughts on how we can make ASB a career that is a first choice?
