Victim Support’s have launched an initiative aimed at the new government to secure more provision to significantly enhance the support and justice available to crime victims and survivors. Their 2024 general election demands seek to achieve the following:
- Investing in Support Services: Consistent, well-funded victim support nationwide.
- Timely Access to Justice: Reducing court wait times and adjournments.
- Enforcing Victims’ Rights: Ensuring the Victims’ Code is upheld in practice.
- Holistic Approach to VAWG: Coordinated response to violence against women and girls.
- Addressing Anti-Social Behaviour: Prioritising ASB victims with proper support services and agency accountability.

Janine’s Thoughts: These priorities could directly benefit not just victims, but also ASB professionals by creating a more supportive and effective system. We definitely endorse the work of Victim Support and this manifesto, and hope that the government works with the sector to create legislation which could have a significant impact.

Northumberland Council Launch Project Shield To Tackle ASB
Northumbria Police has launched Project Shield to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour (ASB) across its jurisdiction. Funded by the Police and Crime Commissioner Susan Dungworth, the project involves collaboration with local authorities and the transport network.
Project Shield will increase patrols and targeted activities in hotspot areas, enhancing community engagement and trust while encouraging the reporting of ASB and crime. Swift action is promised to address incidents, supported by analysts and intelligence officers who will tailor responses to specific areas.
Summer activities will address seasonal increases in ASB and serious violence, with prevention work from the Violence Reduction Unit and youth services – with the goal of more visible policing efforts, increased community engagement and more robust intervention.

Darren’s Thoughts: The use of data to support this initiative is a really positive sign for tackling ASB from a strategic level. By lasering in on the hot spots they can utilise resources more effectively and hopefully get great results. We will be following this to see how the initiative progresses and if more constabularies adopt similar approaches.
