ASB News – Highlights From The Conservative Party & Liberal Democrat Party Conferences
During the 2024 Conservative Party Conference, ASB was a prominent topic in their policy platform. Rishi Sunak outlined a series of proposals aimed at cracking down on ASB if the Conservatives return to power. One key measure was a “three strikes” rule for tenants in social housing, where individuals could be evicted after three proven instances of ASB. Additionally, the Conservatives proposed tougher actions on fly-tipping, suggesting that offenders could receive points on their driving licences or even face imprisonment for severe cases. These initiatives were framed as part of the party’s broader effort to restore pride in communities and improve the quality of life by reducing ASB.
At the same time, the Liberal Democrats at their 2024 conference focused on improving the handling of ASB by enhancing police response times and returning to community-based policing. They highlighted how delayed police responses to ASB incidents erode trust in local authorities and called for more visible policing to prevent such neighbourhood crimes from escalating.
Both parties are addressing ASB as a key issue but approach it differently—one focusing on stricter legal consequences and the other on strengthening community policing and rebuilding trust. As there is no general election on the imminent horizon whether or not we would see any of these policies come to fruition would depend upon them standing the test of time – and with a leadership race underway with the Conservatives there could be significant change coming to all policies. It is definitely a case of wait and see!
