Let’s talk about Disability and ASB on a whole new level…

New Insight - ASB & Disability
This month is Tourettes Awareness Month, and this week is also Mental Health Awareness Week as well as Dementia Awareness Week, which has prompted us here at Green & Burton ASB to think about the topic of Disability and ASB beyond the realm of what is normally examined.
So much time is spent discussing the impact of ASB on those that are disabled, which is of course an incredibly important subject which needs to have effective policy and procedures to manage effectively, however there has not been the same focus on the impact of Disability when it causes behaviour which can be misunderstood as ASB and what impact this can have on policy, procedure and case management.
The recent case highlighted by Inside Housing where the High Court ruled that a council can exclude tenants with disabilities that may contribute to ASB from social housing shows that there is more to consider from the Equality Act 2010.
To explore this topic in more detail we have created an article providing an in depth insight into the topic of ASB and Disability, aimed at expanding your thinking when it comes to the concept of ASB and Disability to include thinking about hidden or intellectual disabilities which could be misconstrued as ASB. It also offers practical tips on how ASB officers can support both victims of ASB who are reporting instances of anti-social behaviour, and how to manage cases where there is a possibility that there is misunderstanding or misidentifying of a disability.
Take a read and let us know your thoughts on this and what you are doing with your policy and case management to navigate the complex world of Disability and its impact on ASB…

The Housing Association Appoint Their New Resident Panel

In a move aimed at improving social housing conditions across England, the Housing Ombudsman has established a new Resident Panel comprising 1,470 members from diverse backgrounds. The panel, which includes representatives from all nine regions of England, will play a crucial role in providing feedback on complaints and suggesting enhancements within the sector.
The Resident Panel will convene four times annually and engage in several specialist groups to delve into crucial areas such as service development and the examination of Spotlight reports. These insights are expected to foster substantial improvements in how social housing issues are addressed.
Panel members, who reflect a broad spectrum of ages, ethnicities, and genders, mirroring the demographic characteristics of social housing residents, will also participate in surveys and respond to key consultations in a three year period.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Housing Ombudsman to bolster engagement with landlords through upcoming plans, including the development of a landlord sounding board, all slated for discussion in the forthcoming Corporate Plan period.
