This Week’s Top Tip – Clarity on Prescription Cannabis Use
During our recent free webinar, we explored the complex issue of nuisance reports arising from the use of prescription cannabis. This week’s top tip comes from Mike Morgan-Giles, CEO of the Cannabis Industry Council, who shared this important reminder:
“Smoking cannabis is never lawful, and a prescription would never be prescribed to be taken in this form.”
This distinction is vital. While prescribed cannabis may be legally used via vaping or oil, smoking remains unlawful – and knowing this can help practitioners respond to reports more effectively and fairly.
Cannabis Webinar – Q&A Now Available
We’re pleased to share the follow-up Q&A from our webinar on the prescription use of cannabis in residential properties. The panel tackled a wide range of questions from practitioners like you.
This downloadable resource includes guidance on:
- Identifying legitimate prescriptions
- Clarifying the difference between smoking and vaping
- Managing data protection concerns
- Using tenancy or ASB powers appropriately

Your Regulatory Round-Up: Sentencing & Immigration Reforms
This week, two major legislative proposals were introduced – both with potential to reshape ASB practice
Sentencing Reform
The Independent Sentencing Review recommends:
- Ending most custodial sentences under 12 months
- Expanding electronic monitoring and community sentencing
- Prioritising rehabilitation over imprisonment
This could mean more persistent ASB offenders managed in the community, placing greater pressure on civil tools and early intervention strategies.
Immigration Reform
New rules include:
- Extending the settlement period from 5 to 10 years
- Raising income and English language thresholds
- Closing the care worker visa route
These changes may affect housing demand, access to support services, and long-term community cohesion.

Janine & Darren’s Weekly Round-Up
This week we’ve been reflecting on the importance of clarity – whether that’s around new legislation, complex casework, or even the tools we rely on every day.
Mike Morgan-Giles’ insight on the legality of smoking cannabis has already sparked some valuable conversations among teams. These cases are becoming increasingly common, and as ASB professionals we’re often the ones asked to make sense of grey areas and translate them into fair, proportionate decisions. We hope the Q&A resource helps strengthen your confidence and approach in this space.
We also know many of you are already planning your calendars for the autumn – so here’s an early save the date:
📅 Monday 8th September – we’ll be hosting a special fringe event at the Housing Community Summit. More details to follow in the coming weeks, but we’re really looking forward to creating a space for deeper discussion and practical takeaways with colleagues across the sector as a valuable lead up to the #ASB11 Conference (don’t forget to use your exclusive subscriber discount link above to secure your tickets!)
In the meantime, we hope this week’s round-up has given you useful insights to carry into the weeks ahead. If you’ve got a question, suggestion or story to share, we’re always happy to hear from you.
Have a great week,
Janine & Darren
